Just a few years after spending $750,000 on the so-called Waikiki beautification project, Jeremy decided to tear it all down and spend $13 million on a new project. He let his little buddy Ben Lee, city managing director and wannabe architect, fulfill his wildest architectural dreams designing the project. The plans called for more buildings, more concrete, fake waterfalls and lily ponds, old-fashioned light poles with flower baskets and underground speakers. There was considerable community opposition to the plan, but as Jeremy has expressed candidly, he makes the decisions, not the community, because "that's leadership." Meanwhile, city roads are full of potholes due to years of neglect and federal highway funds are lost to bungling by the Harris administration. See: Potholes | Honolulu Weekly cartoon 2-9-2000
