| Facing a likely challenge from Jeremy in the '98 Democratic primary, incumbent governor Ben Cayetano called on Senator Dan Inouye for help. Inouye summoned Jeremy to a private meeting. What was said at that meeting was never reported, but when it was over, it was clear that Jeremy would not be running for governor this time. Like "The Horse Whisperer," a popular movie of the day, Inouye was able to whisper just the right words to bring Jeremy into the Democrat donkey corral so that Ben could ride on to re-election.
