The citizens group opposing Jeremy's plan to fully restore the Natatorium, the Kaimana Beach Coalition, argued that because the city cannot get a permit for the saltwater pool, it would be unwise to begin construction. When subpoenaed to testify, Jeremy tried everything he could to weasel out of a court appearance, but finally showed up. At the time of this writing, the city has spent $4 million to restore the façade and two bathrooms at the Natatorium. The bleachers and pool remain derelict and fenced off to the public, waiting for a permit that may never come. Honolulu Weekly cartoon 7-28-1999
