The Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium was constructed in 1927 to honor Hawaii veterans of World War I. Plagued with problems from the beginning, including health hazards associated with the saltwater pool, the facility fell into disrepair and has been closed to the public for many years. In 1997 Jeremy proposed an $11 million complete restoration. Unable to get a state health permit for the saltwater pool, Jeremy insisted that the Natatorium was not a swimming pool. Citizens opposed to the expensive project took the matter to court and a Judge confirmed that the Natatorium was indeed a swimming pool. 'Anybody have a dictionary? Honolulu Weekly cartoon 6-23-1999
